One of our resident wildlife, the echidna chose to cross the road in front of us. When we stopped to check him out he hid his head in the grass and leaves. Obviously the fact he couldn't see us meant that we couldn't see him!!

A Finish

I have been shamed into updating my blog by my eldest lol. As some of you know life over the last few months has been busy, but also turbulent. But, I have managed my first small stitching finish for 2010 - Just Nan's Needle Tweet Daisy ( I think that's the name of it lol) Very very cute - the pic does not do it justice. I have finished the purple one - need to make it up, and am stitching the pink one. Wouldn't you know it? I have just about all the WDW colours but could I find Love for the pink Needle Tweet? No, of course not! So I have used one of Crescent Colours.

On the other side of life (the non stitching side) I have finished my Cert 3 in Aged Care and am now job hunting. Also, I have my appt today about having an abdominoplasty (if that is how you spell it). I am the lowest weight I have been for well over 20 years and feeling pretty darn good.

Emotionally we are all not doing quite so well after losing DH's mother so suddenly a few weeks ago. But we are getting there, the most important thing is being there for him.

Some Sad News

I have been wanting to get back to my blog for ages but life has been so busy. I hope that things quieten down soon. I have not stitched in months, there are a number of things I am behind on and a lot of news to impart - but now is not the time for that - maybe tomorrow.

My Mother in Law was killed in a car accident in Perth on March 24. To say we were shocked is putting it mildly as she doesn't even drive. We are still numb, particularly DH - he is coping but I think it has not really sunk in yet. We had a rush trip back to Perth (for those that don't know it is on the other side of the country from us - so a 4hr flight). He went a day earlier and dealt with everything he needed to.

No, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, although I'm sure you must all think I have. Sadly I have to report I have done zero stitching for weeks now - just as well I had all my ornaments done ages ago.

I have soooo much to tell...............

First off some very sad news. Some of you may remember Psycho Duck. She was the victim of a fox attack a couple of weeks ago - we were all heartbroken. We will get another couple of ducks at some stage though, and I think one will have to be named Psycho Too (as opposed to Two). She was so tame and such a character - we miss her greatly.

Cramar (our Pointer pup) is growing like a little weed. He and Leeroy are now great mates. I will try and take a pic soon.

We have a new addition. Jaffa the kitten. She is a tortoiseshell and while Calico tolerates her (just) I don't think they will ever become good mates lol.

The kids are away in Canberra for a month - they get back January 16 - so it is very very very quiet around here. We miss them to bits.

Umm, what else. Oh yes ........ we have put the house on the market and have put an offer in on 205 acres of land about 45 minutes further out. SO.... big changes are afoot. Don't ask me where we will live while the house is being built - I have absolutely no idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The final piece of news is that Craig and I are engaged. he took me off to a romantic B & B (country french style) on Boxing Day and we had dinner in Tanunda. When we got back to our room he made me wait outside so he could 'prepare'. I then had to keep my eyes closed while he led me into the room and sat me down. He has candles everywhere, roses from our garden and was down on one knee.

Well, he is back with dinner (fish and chips - yum) so I will have to add more later!!!

I can't believe it is already September. We are starting to have some beautiful weather during the day!! We have swooping magpies - a sure sign of Spring lol. We have the fairy wrens outside DD's window every day, but they don't stay still long enough for me to get a pic of them. Also I saw the plovers that are nesting at DD's school. They are very protective - I just hope no one steps on their 2 eggs!!
You may remember psycho duck from previous posts. Well, she's at it again. We finally knew for sure that she was a 'she' when she started laying eggs a few weeks ago. Well, as is normal for all of the animals in this family, she has to do things a little bit different. She has decided she wants to sit on the eggs. Doesn't matter that most of them are the chook's eggs!!! After a heartfelt plea from DD we have decided to let her keep some and see if they hatch. After all, we have been babysitting a friend's rooster so she could have some fertile eggs, so we know these are fertile as well. He was close to becoming roast rooster (I don't take kindly to being woken at 4am!!!), but he now has a reprieve - temporarily at least lol. Goodness knows how we will make the chook yard chick proof though!!

I have been fitting in a bit of stitching time so have a couple of things to show:These are a couple of bottle top pincushions - so cute!! I can see me making more of these. This little bat is for an exchange - I think he would have looked better full size though (I stitched him over 1)

On the footy front, DS's team beat the undefeated Nuriootpa side and made it straight into the Grand Final. Nuri then won their next game which means they will be facing off again for the Grand Final this Saturday. So that will be pretty exciting, and nail biting no doubt!!! This Under 15's team is the only team from the Barossa Bulldogs to make it to the finals

In other news, we bought a new car a couple of weeks ago - well it's 2nd hand, but new to us lol. Although I've been telling people we gave my little Holden Viva some growth hormones to turn it into a Commodore lol. I must admit it has been nice having a bit more room dividing the ferals in the back seat lol. Not a good pic but enough to get the idea

We have been visiting Cramar every couple of weeks - he is 7 weeks old now and growing like a little weed lol. He will be coming home with us in another 2 weeks.

As you can see, he and his brothers and sisters love people already lol

I can now show pics of some of the exchanges I have sent out recently as they have arrived at their new homes. First is a biscornu - the theme was 'Anything Summer' so I chose Barbara Ana's Summer Biscornu. I used a linen I had in my stash that is exactly the colour of wet sand. The 2nd is a biscornu for a Just Nan themed exchange for Stitching Exchanging. I used her Beach Roses designs but didn't remember to take a pic of it before I sent it off, You can see it here though.

I also have a pic of my current WIP. A Messerschmitt from A & L Designs' Sky Ace Series. I stitched a Lancaster bomber for DS a while ago, but this one is for DH. It is stitching up quite quickly and thank goodness is smaller than the bomber. You can see the bomber in my webshots album here

The end to another week dawns - thank goodness. You may wonder why I have been so quiet?? lol I started back at work almost 3 weeks ago. I have bought the parcel run for our local area and it has been flat out learning the procedures, where everything is, the customers etc etc. Plus of course, my fitness level is non existent. I'm getting there though. I've had DH working with me this week as his work van is off the road - don't even ask me about that one!!!

Needless to say, stitching and blogging time is suffering severely. I have started stitching a plane for DH when I do get to stitch. Also a Harvest themed item for Stitching Exchanging's next exchange. I haven't signed up yet - I want to make sure I will be able to finish it first!! lol

If you want to take part, head on over - you couldn't meet a nice bunch of stitchers :-) And no, I'm not biased at all lol

I have been very frustrated trying to get hold of a copy of Just Cross Stitch's Halloween issue - it is so hit and miss finding a Newsagent that stocks the mag at all on a regular basis. I managed to snag the Christmas preview though. I always end up having to resort to ebay for the Ornament issue each year. So if anyone in Adelaide hears of where JCS is available, please let me know. The only one I have found on ebay is in the US and wants $13 US for the postage!!!

Quite a few other exchanges are in the mail, on the way to their new homes - getting to the PO has also been a huge challenge!! When they arrive I will be able to post pics of them.

I wanted to introduce you to the futre newest member of our family. We decided Leeroy needed a friend now he is alone all day. Jetset was keeping him company, but these days she spends her days talking to the gelding behind us over the back fence - tart she is lol. We pondered on what sort of dog would be best suited to keep up with an english pointer............... another one of course lol. We have already met him, he was 3 weeks old when this pic was taken (last weekend). As yet he has no name....................................

A New Blog

I have started a new blog for my own Blue Opal Threads. With one thing and another over the recent years I never got around to developing them as I wished - so I reckon now's the time!!!

We had a busy day. The kids played sport this morning - DS kicking his second goal!!!! We son't talk about DD's netball team though. Some days they play great, and more often not so great. The most important thing though, is that they are learning more of the game, developing their skills, learning teamwork and having a lot of fun and healthy excercise at the same time!!!

Some lovely stitching stash in the mail during the week. besides the ATC's I have received threads, fabric and patterns - even the game of Stitchopoly!!! Spoiled or what??? :-) I must make special mention of the stash filled envelope that Margaret send me though - absolutely stunning. Pic to follow!!

I did the whole cutting up bits of paper thingy and got DH to draw the winner's name. I must be getting old, the thought of the random number generator thingy on the computer just didn't do it for me lol.

I had a great birthday, thank you for all the kind wishes :-) I have to take some piccies of birthday stash, but will not be able to do that til the weekend.

I returned to work Monday - boy is it hard. Not only learning the new parcel round, but the sheer physical effort of it - especially after the last 7 months. Blog reading is non existent, housework only minimal, and as for stitching or reading time - what is that? lol I'm sure it will settle as I learn the round and get more familiar with the whole scanning system etc. At least that's what I am telling myself!!

The tummy is still not sorted. The last little bit just will not heal. Still - it isn't oozing, it isn't filling up inside and it isn't infected. I guess that is as good as it can be for a while.

DD (11 yrs) has started her own blog - can someone please go and leave a comment? lol, poor thing is checking it constantly. She has news on our duck!!

While on the subject - Melinda asked how I finished Winter Violets. I painted and varnished a small paper mache box. The top is mounted on padded card, then glued to the box top. Very easy to do and so effective! I plan on doing another one but with a different finish around the box.

We have had an exciting few days. Some very good friends visited us from Canberra for a few days. We had a great time, it was so good to see them - only the 2nd time in about 6 years. I can't believe that I didn't take a single photo while they were here!!.......... next time lol

Today we have our homestay student arriving from Japan. So the next few days will be very busy. I will try and remember to take pictures lol. This is the girl that DD stayed with when she visited Japan last year. So I am anticipating a lot of giggles from them.

We had some unwelcome excitement Monday morning. DD came running in to tell us the dog was gone. DS always lets him out of his pen about 7am - so had potentially been gone well over an hour. Where we live is surrounded by large blocks of land, sheep properties, bush land and a road that has semi trailers travelling faster than they should right at the end of our gate. So we were worried. Being the doggie equivalent of a teenage male he has no sense and if he gets out he puts nose to the ground and goes............................ what else could I expect from a pointer lol. Amazingly we found him about half an hour after we discovered him missing - playing with another dog a fair way away - it was pure fluke that DH even saw him. In the time it took to turn the car around, he and his new playmate had disappeared. As soon as DH called him he came pelting up to him full speed and dived in the back seat. I was so relieved I couldn't even tell him off lol

Well, I'm off to get dressed, enough sitting round in my pj's reading blogs lol

A Correction

The cute reindeer from my last post is not from Just Cross Stitch. It's a very generous freebie from Daffycat. I was confuzzling myself. I am stitching another reindeer at the moment (from JCS) - It has blended colours and I thought I'd got them wrong, so frogged some of it, then realised I was right in the first place!! So had to restitch exactly what I'd done!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. But it will be worth it cos it's cute.

So, apolgies to Daffycat, and again a thank you for such generosity in offering freebies :-)

A question................

Since I have become addicted to stitching 'smalls', I have been having trouble finding a way to display them that I am happy with. So I thought I'd ask - how does everyone else do it? I have seen needlerolls in baskets and a large glass containter - I have my own in a basket (pictured) . I have seen biscornus in a basket or a patty cake holder. But what do I do with the ornaments (when not hanging on the tree at Xmas), the scissor fobs, scissor pockets, cupcakes, needlebooks, tins, boxes etc etc etc lol Nothing I can come up with seems to do them justice. And of course space becomes an issue here as well lol.

So......... I'd love to hear if anyone has any brilliant ideas they use or have thought of!

The health saga is almost done (I hope). Just a little bit of the last incision wound is not healing (just like back in January so it's very deja vu) We just have to keep an eye on it and keep it clean til it finally heals. So at this stage I will be returning to work August 3 - the day before my birthday - I didn't plan that very well did I!!!!

I have been stitching away for the Little House Needleworks Exchange on Stitching Exchanging. I did a bit of a whoops on it but will not have to fess up to that til it reaches it's new home. Stitching Exchanging is only a new group but growing steadily - a lovely, creative bunch of stitchers. Hmm, is there a collective pronoun for a group of stitchers??? Maybe we should come up with one lol. Anyway, if you love exchanges come along and join us.

2 biscornu finishes - both are designed by Faby Reilly

The first is her Poppy Biscornu - I love the colours - even though purple is my favourite colour, red comes close behind lol. One day I'll find the right buttons for it, but for the moment, plain black will have to do.

The 2nd is Faby's Sweet Pea and Honeysuckle Biscornu. Even more special because Faby allowed me to model stitch it for her website. I really enjoyed stitching it and must confess to a little thrill every time I see it there or on her blog lol. Thank you Faby :-)

Firstly - a huge thank you to Bronny - I won a chart and some other goodies in her giveaway - including some gorgeous hand dyed aida. I rarely stitch on aida these days, but these pieces are so pretty and lovely and soft they will certainly be used!! The pic doesn't include the DMC floss.

We've had a busy weekend. The kids both won their games on Saturday. DS plays footy for the Barossa District Football Club U15s and DD plays with the Barossa District Netball Club U11 team. It was an early start for us as they were both playing away at Kapunda - a tad chilly I must say!! We had great celebration last weekend as DS kicked his first ever goal!! DH wasn't there as the kids were playing different teams and he was at Nurioopta for the netball game while we were at Willaston, but I saw it all!! I was so proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Sunday it was housecleaning day & painting & odd jobs day for DH. He has decided the fence has to be painted. Why you would decide to do this in the middle of a rainy winter I have no idea lol. Must be a man thing I think!! I got the cooking bug - I made Jamie Oliver's 2 nut chocolate torte - it really is so yummy. This is the 3rd time I have made it and it always turns out perfectly. Then some easy fried rice I got from a great Aussie recipe site Allrecipes followed by some Afghan biscuits. So the kids reckon they have it pretty good for school lunches this week! The weekend was capped off by an impromptu goal shooting competition (putting up the goal post was one of DH's odd jobs this weekend). I won!!! I think the whole family was amazed. It helped though that I didn't have to run after the ball - at least there is one advantage to the tummy saga. The kids run off and get it for me lol.

Speaking of the tummy saga - I spent more time in hospital as they had to go in again and clean it all out. To be honest a tummy tuck would probably sort it right out lol. There are pockets in the roll of fat (ugh) that keep filling up cos it was all irritated by the mesh from the hernia repair. Had the stitches and drain out last week and things seemed to be going well, but then Thursday I noticed a bit of a weepy spot (which is what this all started with back in January). Anyway, a check today shows that it seems fine, so I am cautiously optimistic that this is finally going to settle down. I will have a better idea if all is behaving when I go back next week. Thank you so much to the people who have left such supportive comments and emailed me privately. I really appreciate it and it helps so much.

This week will be pretty busy as well. We have a meeting at school for our impending japanese home stay visit. The children are due to arrive next month, so it's getting closer!! Tomorrow DD's Taiko group is performing at Williamstown Primary School for their Japanese Cultural Day - I have volunteered to transport one child and the drums. Guess which child I have to take lol. I'll try and get a pic.

Of course this is the last week of school, so reports will be coming home and school discos and goodness knows what else!

I have completed a number of pieces for upcoming exchanges, but I cannot show any of them for a while yet - I'm so far ahead it's scary lol. People that know me well would not be surprised if when it comes time to send them in a couple of months I can't remember where I put them for safe keeping lol. Here are some things I can show you though:

Just Nan's 15 sided biscornu. I was so better equipped to finish this with it being my second. Most of it was done in hospital and I am so so happy with how it turned out. I substituted my own buttons though, I am not a fan of large centres as a rule, so decided to make the change.

Another Just Nan finish that is long overdue - When Barnabee met Bella. I had the blue side done, then managed to mislay (is that a word) the lavender fabric and the chart. I had the embellishment pack though lol. Finally found it last week so got to and finished it.

Country French Needleroll by M Designs. I started it over 10 months ago and finall got around to finishing it. But, I realised I have made at least 2 mistakes that to me are glaring!! Also they annoy me everytime I look at it. So this could well be the subject of a giveaway ... stay tuned for details.

This is my current WIP, started last night in front of the TV. It is Bent Creek's Hen, in keeping with our chook theme it is destined for the kitchen wall. I agonised over the fabric but must say I am feeling happy with the choice as it stitches up.

The newest addition to my stash are these 2 charts from The Cat's Whiskers. I had intended to attend the workshop for Fruits of the Harvest but as it was at the same time as we were packing for our move to South Australia, decided I didn't have the time to spare. Janie had said it would be eventually released so here it is!!

Well, I think that is more than enough for now!!! lol

What a Week!!

Indeed it has been quite some week. I have only been home from hospital for a couple of days. Yes - the tummy saga again. I'm not even going to go there, except to say it's not over yet.

DH and the kids coped pretty well while I wasn't here. Except for maybe the cupcake baking that was required lol. DD had to take in some decorated cupcakes for a competition at school. The cakes would then be sold and funds would go to the World's Biggest Morning Tea - at least that is what I think it was all about. Anyway, I was giving instructions over the phone from my hospital bed at 7am lol - but the end result certainly looked good!

I certainly managed to get some stitching done. The Strawberries N'Bees Biscornu by Veeandco came up beautifully, the photos just do not do it justice. Thank goodness I thought to pop it into my bag when I headed off to emergency, otherwise I would have had no stitching with me!

Fridayitis

A bit of a blah day today. I had my checkup with the surgeon and everything is looking good. It's still pretty sore though and lumpy on one side plus a bit red which could mean more antibiotics (that would mean lot number 11). But so far he is happy. But..... he did say cos I have to lift up to 20k at work I still have to remain at home for another month :-( The only good thing I guess is that it's more stitching time. It has still left me feeling flat and a bit fragile.

On to more positive things though...... thank you for the lovely comments about the Anniversary Biscornu. Jen - I have When Barnabee Met Bella almost halfway done, but I don't even know where it is at the moment. maybe I should try hunting it out. Seeing yours has certainly given me inspiration :-)

I received JN's Grow tin this week, so have started that. It's not one of my favourites but it is growing on me ...... no pun intended lol

I really should learn not to go hunting when people mention designers and freebies on groups and blogs. You'd think I'd know better by now. I was introduced to Veeandco and just had to get her Strawberries N' Bees biscornu. It is so pretty and I am a sucker for strawberries.

On the home front we had DD (11yrs) at a school camp Mon, Tues and Wed. Boy was it quite without her and her brother fighting!!!! She came home very tired and very grumpy though. Also, the 2 men of the house have both had colds - so that has been interesting!!

Well off to make a cuppa I think, and maybe some more stitching before the peace is shattered by the family lol.

I have a couple of small finishes. The first was a design I saw in issue 198 of Cross Stitcher - I just had to do it to put on DS's (14yrs) bedroom door. Although it should probably have read 'keep out' lol. 11yr old DD is the one that needs a danger sign on her door, it's a risk setting foot in there I can tell you!! Some would say she takes after her mother, but of course they handle the truth VERY carelessly in that regard!! ;-)

The second is something I started ages ago and was half done. Goodness knows why it sat around so long, it's so cute finished. Lorri Birmingham's Busy Bee Needle Keep. I still have quite a few bits and pieces of hers I should get done.

I have had the operation and came home the next day. I so so hope this sorts it out. I am pretty sore and have a drain in at the moment, with a nurse coming out every day to check things over. And of course antibiotics - for the 10th time since February. One discovery though - from what I can see under the dressing - I don't think I have a belly button anymore!!!

Stitchingwise has been very productive. I have started the most stunning biscornu from Olenka's Stitches. I had so many of her other designs I would like to get first and she has to go and design this one which shot to the top of the 'must have' list lol. Between Olga and Faby I will never have time to stitch anything else!!! lol

While I was in hospital I finished the other of the DMC Kimono Dolls - now I just have to make them into cushions. Pics to follow when I finally get that done, although it's not high on the list of priorities as I don't need them until late July.

I also have to get motivated and finish off the Cat's Whiskers cupcakes I have stitched for Mother's Day, otherwise I will never get them mailed out. No way will they arrive in time though. I will takes pics of them when done

We have a Japanese teacher staying with us for the next few weeks. She is here teaching at our school and studying english. She comes from the school that DD visited in Japan last year. She has a blog on the school website. When we moved here, we were amazed to find that this school has a Cultural Exchange Program - it's so small compared to all our previous schools. We so enjoyed having one of the Japanese students stay with us last year. This year we will be hosting the girl that DD stayed with in Japan, so we are very excited, as are both of the girls! Now you know who the Kimono Dolls cushions are for! I have just found where DD has written about the visit from the Japanese students last year here

I thought you might like to meet a couple of the 4 legged members of our family. First though, I took a photo this morning from our back door and thought you'd like to see! As you can see it is very overcast. We have been getting some much needed rain since yesterday!! Finally, the grass will start to get a bit of colour. Our property is named Wahroonga - an aboriginal word meaning our home. We have only lived here 18 months and it already had that name. The house was originally built in 1849 and served as the local post office from about 1910 until the 1970's

Ok, here we have Leeroy - his name and the name I use for our blog (as in 'the Leeroys') is an amalgamation of our surnames. He is an English Pointer, 2 years old and an eternal puppy. As you can see here he was a bit wary of what I was up to. It's so hard to ever take a photo of him as he is always wanting to be up close and personal lol The closer the better he reckons. I have to say, he often reminds me so much of DS (14yrs). Not sure if it's a boy thing, or the teenage factor lol -they both have such boundless enthusiasm and energy.

This is Calico. She is 5 years old and being a total pain at the moment.

She decided some time ago that her owner is DD (11yrs), although as most cat owners will know, it's more that she owns DD. The reason she is being so painful is that DD has been away for a couple of weeks - thank goodness she gets home tomorrow! Calico seems to think that it is my sole role in life to let her in and out of the house. She comes in then whinges straight away to be let out. Then, of course, she wants to come straight back in. At our previous house the back and front doors were at each end of a long corridor - directly in line. She'd cry to come in the back door, then waltz straight up to the front door, demanding to be let out!!! Obviously, she didn't believe in walking around through the garden!!

Seriously though, she is a sweetie normally.

Spider Biscornu

Okay, so I couldn't help myself could I lol. I had hoped there was a spider button lurking in my stash, but no such luck. Now I see it I think that a spider would have been too much. This was a freebie by Faby Reilly, who is fast becoming one of my favourite designers, as well as a very nice person. I am also posting this as my April biscornu for the Basket of Biscornu Challenge . yeah yeah I know, it's more suited to October, but I couldn't resist it lol. I stitched it on a piece of my own hand dyed fabric and I used some kreinik blending filament to give the cauldron contents a bit of magic!

Footprints is done and framed. Finally!! This was started and meant to be finished as a present for my father's birthday. I have a horrible feeling it was for his 70th..........

Ummmmm, he turned 78 December last year. Now you know why this thing is deserving of a drum roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The reason he still didn't get it last birthday is that for the life of me, I could not get the thing straight. I've finally had to give up and get it as close as I can - so just don't look too close. I still love it, but it has been a nightmare. Things like coffee split on it, a broken thread in the linen when I got impatient trying to frog the over one writing, the very existence of all that writing, and I can't forget all the back stitch in the border. But...... it is done. So long as he doesn't wear his glasses when he looks at it!!

My second finish is this DMC kit Kimono Dolls, waiting to be made into a cushion. It is to have a twin, so I have to start stitching it again when I can find a piece of white aida - a difficult prospect in this house!!! It's using aida again that has me delaying the start, or even the aida hunt. But, it does have to be done cos I am on a deadline with these.

My spider biscornu is finally sewn up, I just have to find a nice button or charm then I will post a pic

A Busy Week

First off, thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts. It really is heartening to know people care. The latest is that they look like doing surgery the 28th of this month, but apparently it is considered elective surgery so may be cancelled. I have spoken to my GP and we are looking for a second opinion in the meantime. Considering we have private health insurance the whole situation is ludicrous. Anyway, fingers and toes crossed it gets sorted soon. At least the infection has cleared so I need a new name - smelly belly no longer applies lol. Maybe snuffles - as I have been down with a head cold the last couple of days.

It's been a busy time for celebrations this last week. Of course we had Easter, but the kids all had their birthdays as well. DD has now turned the grand old age of 11 and DS is a super cool 14. Eldest DD is now 19 - even though we are not in contact she was in my thoughts all day yesterday.
Yes, they all have birthdays within a 9 day period. Not planned that way I can tell you!!!!

DD & DS are currently on school holidays. It is very quiet though as they are spending them in Canberra visiting their Dad. Craig and I took advantage of this and had a lovely romantic dinner at a local winery which specialises in Tapas. It was so yummmmm, and perfect for me with my gastric band.

Stitching wise has been fairly productive. I have finished a very long standing project - will post more on that when I take a pic of it. I am also just finishing the back stitch on a piece that will become a cushion - pic to follow also.

A Need to Vent

The following is not for the squeamish.

Some of you may remember I have had a couple of hernia repairs in recent months. The first was done as emergency surgery midnight the Sunday before Christmas. For all the drama and worry of it, it healed beautifully. I wish the same could be said of the second one - repaired Jan 19. I ended up with a staph infection, which has cleared, but it is now infected again. So I am on my 8th lot of antibiotics - yes 8th. It has gone from being a tiny little bit of the incision that would not heal and could be covered with a bandaid - to a hole that is - to me - huge (1.5cm). Not only that, but it is about the same depth, like a well. We were changing dressings ourselves but it has got beyond that and I now have to go into town or the hospital to have it done every day. When the nurse tells you she can see forever down the hole - you have to worry!! The worst is that for 6 weeks now, it has been oozing, as in heaps. At first it was liquid, no smell. Now it is thick, gooey and to be perfectly frank - smells and looks absolutely disgusting. I have no idea how my family can tolerate being near me.

And what is being done about all this?? Not much!!! I have my 2 weekly followup appt at the hospital where it was done on Thursday. This time I will not be putting up with the usual 'it's looking good' or 'we're actually quite happy with how it's going'. This needs to be fixed now. It has degenerated so much in the 2 weeks since I saw them last.

Between the infection and ongoing antibiotics, I feel yuck. To say the least. Plus, no doubt my family will tell you I am an awful grump. Plus, I keep getting teary - feeling sorry for myself I guess. Although, the last couple of days, it's got so bad I can actually laugh about it. We have always had a family joke that DH is Jelly Belly (comes from him having a Team Jelly Belly cycling skinsuit - I won't mention the slight jelly belly he has grown in recent months) Well, now I am Smelly Belly. I know poor DS (13yrs) came so close to saying that the other day, watching his brain catch up with his mouth just in the nick of time was truly priceless lol.

Well, that's my much needed vent.

I have been busy stitching wise. I found Faby Reilly's designs by accident - but they are lovely, with many of them now on my to do list. Well, once I buy them lol. I have a couple to be going on with though. My first finish is her Lavender Bouquet Biscornu.

Next is a small Just Nan - Winter Violets. Can you tell my favourite colour is purple? I love these little ones of hers, I have heaps in my stash and really must do more of them. I painted a paper mache box for it - it is so cute, the colour goes well with the fabric, but does not show well in the pic.

Last but not least, a couple of cupcake pincushions from The Cat's Whiskers. I have some more of these stitched but sourcing the silicone cups at a reasonable price here has been slow. I'm thinking they will make nice pressies for both mothers for Mother's Day.

A chook????

I'm afraid we seem to have someone here with a bit of an identity crisis. DD left the chooks' gate open so they can roam the horse paddock. Jetset seems to have decided she wants to be a chook. Anyone would think she had no food - she is in there picking up the tiniest bits of hay. Don't worry about the huge bale of her own - obviously that doesn't taste as good!!

Meanwhile, Angas the duck (actually we are pretty sure he's a drake) has decided he does not want to live with the chooks, he wants to stay under the back pergola as close to us as possible. No matter how many times we put him where we think he belongs, back he comes. Over the 6' fence, across the horse paddock, and over the garden fence. Calico the cat is less than impressed - he follows her everywhere she goes when she is outside. Maybe he thinks he's a cat?

Birthday Boy

Yesterday was DH's 45th Birthday. He enjoyed being woken up at 5.45am with a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday lol. The kids insisted he had to open his presents before he went to work, even if his eyes were shut at the time!! We made him a Tour Down Under cake in honour of his ride this year.

Bushfire

Well, what can I say? I can't even think of words to describe how I feel. My heart goes out to everyone involved. The number of lives lost and torn apart is incomprehensible. Thank goodness for the fire fighters, how much greater the toll if not for them? It is heartening to see the Aussie spirit - the way the whole country bands together to do whatever possible for those that need it.

One thing it has shown me, is that we need to be better prepared as we too live in a rural area. We will now be working to have our Bushfire plan in place, rather than the 'adhoc' plan we had.

Heat!

These photos were taken by a some cyclists here in Adelaide on Tuesday. Sorry I can't give appropriate credit - I don't know the cyclists or the photographer - they came to me via DH's Barossa cycling group. While it's hard to see how difficult it is for the wildlife in this heat, it's heartening to see things like this. We are placing water around the place in the hope it helps some of our 'locals' as I'm sure a lot of people are doing.

This morning we got up early and went to the beach. It was so lovely, but then the wind really came up. All the way home it was like a huge dust storm right over Adelaide, all the way to here at home. Thank goodness a cool change is forecast this afternoon then cooler temps all week.

I had my appt at the banding dr - we have to check out the reflux by having an endoscopy - another anaesthetic - sheesh. It's happening on Feb 26.

Biscornu Fever

Well, here is another one - my first attempt at a 15 sided biscornu. I think it could have done with more stuffing, still, I'm pretty happy with it. By the end I was better at getting the corners right. So the next one would have better corners I suspect.

The heat here is a bit better today, thank goodness it shouldn't be as hot this week - only high 30's and up to 40. I can't believe I think that's good lol. On a sadder note though, we lost 2 of our chickens. One at least was one of the originals that were here when we bought the house - Hopalong.

We had the bright idea to turn the temp down on the spa last night, it was glorious. I can't believe it took us a week to work that one out!!!

A quiet week planned. I have an appt with the banding dr tomorrow. I could do with some more fill, but I'm still having reflux problems. I'm also a bit worried that these 2 surgeries may have made the band slip?? So it will be good to get all sorted. I think I'm doing quite well weightwise though. I am about the same as I was when I went for the 1st op just before Christmas. It's a bit annoying though, that I had got down another couple of kilos in the last few weeks, only to bounce back. All in all though, I think I should be fairly happy. It's so good to be shopping for clothing in the regular area of shops!!!

Here is my Jewel Tones biscornu. I had severe doubts while stitching this. Then I had the bright idea of back stitching between each colour with kreinik braid - wow, what a difference. It is impossible to take a pic that does it justice. It is so sparkly, and the Crescent Colors threads are so rich. Instead of a button in the centre, I have used a rainbow crystal montee, to catch the colours. I am very very happy with the way it turned out. For anyone interested, the design is by DebBee's Designs from the 2007 JCS Christmas Ornament Issue. Hope my swap partner likes it!

We are still surviving the heat - just. Fortunately the kids rooms are ok at night with their fans. Ours bears the full brunt of the sun all day though, so it is like a sauna all night. Last night we moved our mattress into the lounge with the aircon. It will stay there for the duration. It got to a top of around 47C (116.6F) a couple of days ago, it's always a couple of degrees more than the city up here. Overnight temps are staying in the low 30's - sheesh

A Very Sad Day

Our littlest duckling succumbed to the heat yesterday. So everyone is very sad. His friend Angus is hale and hearty, but feeling a bit lonely. So DD has given him a soft toy which he takes great delight in flinging around the place with his beak. Here is is with his toy in the background.

Everyone else in the family is coping with the heat here in SA, just!! Although DD is home today after throwing up all over the bathroom floor this morning before school. She seems to have made a miraculous recovery as the day has progressed.

In other news, the TDU is over for another year. DH completed the Mutual Community Challenge in once piece, even bearing in mind he has had little time to train this year. We were still in Nuriootpa after he finished when the 'pro's came past. He and the kids also visited the TDU Village and went to the final stage on Sunday. How cool that Alan Davies won!! DS is quite proud of the fact he got his autograph last year.

Stitching wise I have been pretty occupied. A couple of finishes - Count LeScarrot and a biscornu I am about to make up. Pic to come later.

Another Finish

This is the Needlebook I have stitched for an online Valentine's Exchange. I have used Just Nan's Purple Heart, which I have been wanting to stitch for a while. It has turned out so well I am thinking of doing it again, and also using the companion piece - Lady in Red Heart as a matching Pinkeep for my own use.

I know it doesn't seem like it at the moment, but I don't only stitch designs by Just Nan!!

Tour Down Under

Yes, the Tour Down Under has started. A cause for great interest in the house. The first stage came past our door yesterday. We were outside, with flags, balloons etc and our neighbours for company. We will be able to see a couple more stages, but not as many as we'd hoped. DH is riding in the Mutual Community Challenge on Friday, but we will be unalbe to be his 'support crew' as usual as I am not permitted to drive for a week :-(

DS was very excited to get one of the riders feed bags - from Team Astana - Lance Armstrong's team!! It even came with some of the energy bars lol.

My op went well. I was allowed home the following day (yesterday) just in time to see the Tour. A lot more sore and sorry for myself than the last time, and very very tired. Still - more stitching time!!

I'm sure many people looked at me odd as I was in the waiting room prior to the surgery. I was finishing an ornament and a needlebook - with associated bits and pieces everywhere!!!! Much better than sitting doing nothing though.

Stitching wise, I have started Just Nan's Boo tin and Needlebook - I've got Hop to do next. I was determined not to buy the 2009 series, but I don't know if I will be able to hold out!!!

As for health, well, that saga continues. I got a phone call from the hospital yesterday afternoon to remind me of my pre admission appointment first thing the next day (as in today). Ummm, for what I asked?? 'Your surgery next Monday' was the reply. Turns out the repair of the other hernia was listed as semi urgent, so instead of later in the year as I had assumed - it's back to hospital Monday. The only good thing I guess is that at least everything will be done, and of course there is the extra stitching time.

A GF and I went to the movies today - we saw Bride Wars, a great chick flick and very very funny. DH and I saw Marley and Me on Tuesday - that was great as well, but I bawled my eyes out!! So, I have certainly been taking advantage of my kid free time.

Speaking of the kids, we pick them up this weekend, I must say, I have missed the little monsters - although not so little anymore!!!!! I will not be sorry to relinquish feeding the menagerie duties though.

Well yes, I know it's a bit late. What better time for my first post though?

It's been a pretty busy time lately. We had DH's Mum coming to stay for Christmas - but the day of her arrival I was rushed to hospital by ambulance. I ended up having emergencey surgery at midnight. I was allowed home Christmas Eve and best of all, got out of cooking Christmas lunch!!

DD & DS are both away visiting their grandparents for a couple of weeks in Victoria, so I am having quiet convalescing time. Also some much appreciated together time with DH. We had the loveliest dinner at a local winery - Murdocks at Tanunda. I can highly recommend it!!!!!

We are getting very excited as the start of the Tour Down Under approaches. Tuesdays stage passes right by our front door. DH is riding in the breakaway ride on the Friday - even after 3 years I cannot understand the urge to ride a bike for 150kms though lol. Still, he enjoys it and we love being his support team.

We have a few new additions to the family - 2 muscovy ducklings a couple of weeks before Christmas, and 5 new laying hens last Saturday. So DD will be most excited when she gets home. She's our resident 'chook lady'.

On the stitching front, I am having trouble settling to anything atm. I have signed up for a couple fo swaps though, so will spend some time hunting out some possibly desgns to stitch.

I spent yesterday making cherry jam. It is sooo yummmmmmmmmm lol. Nectarine jam to be made today!!!
